Happy 1 Year to LACB!

Sunday’s are usually my Day By Days – a time to reflect and appreciate the past week. But today’s a bit bigger; today is my day to look back at the entire year.

It feels almost like I just started Lace and Combat Boots, and yet, here we are at the one year mark. Thank you to everyone who has been here with me from the beginning. It’s strange to think about how much has changed over the past year. Just a year ago, I was finishing up my last year in college and living in California. Now, I’m living in New York and pursuing my dream. It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it. I am so happy to have you all here for this scary, beautiful journey. Thank you.

This week has been interesting to say the least. It didn’t end on the best note, but I’m trying to take things one day at a time. What this week really taught me though is how important it is to know your self-worth. If you know it, no one can take it away from you. As the great Eleanor Roosevelt said, ”No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” I think it’s important for all of us tor remember that.

What this week has also taught me is that dressing up and actually making an effort in the morning is a wonderful pick-me-up. One of the worst things you can do after a bad day is to curl up on the couch in your sweatpants and feel sorry for yourself. Yes, we all have bad days and are allowed to feel a bit bummed. But the key is to pick yourself up and go back out in to the world and use your bad day to fuel you. Put on a nice outfit that makes you feel confident, and then go out and kick butt and take names.

Day by Day Through Instagram.

I hope we all can take the time today to be grateful for the wonderful, strong woman who brought us in to the world. I feel so lucky to have such an amazing and supportive mother. She really is my role model and I feel really blessed to have her in my life. Although I’m across the country from her today, I hope she knows how important she is to me.

This week has been pretty low-key surprisingly. I thought it would be a bit chaotic since I was at the ENK Accessorie Circuit for two days, but everything worked itself out.

Here are some of my favorite moments of the week:

1. Finally re-designing LACB.

2. Sitting in Union Square Park for lunch with a friend.

3. Having a mini Disney movie marathon after work with Joe.

4. Catching up with old friends via Instagram. Who knew that this little app would bring us back together so easily?

5. Watching “MacBeth” at the New School for Drama last night and then enjoying chicken parmesan wraps on the way home.

How has your week been? Are you doing anything special for Mother’s Day?

Why You Shouldn’t Lie About Your Age.

For all those who have been following LACB for a while, you know how I feel about vintage. I could (and do) spend hours scouring thrift shops and flea markets in my spare time, and love the thrill of finding a new little treasure. I love that every piece has a story and history. When it comes to vintage clothing especially, the piece is even more interesting the longer it has been around.

A recent vintage shopping trip in Park Slope got me thinking about the stigma that older women like to lie about their age. While this may be true in some cases, I think age is such a beautiful thing. After all, it’s how we learn, become better, and become more knowledgeable about the world as a whole. Most also find that they become more comfortable with themselves as they get older, which I think is a feat within itself. Personally, I love being able to look back and see the changes I’ve been through over the years. Trust me, 15-year-old Melanie is nowhere near as awesome as the current me (just kidding - I’m still just as nerdy as ever! :) )

I really do think that things really do get better with age though –  including us.
