Why You Shouldn’t Lie About Your Age.

For all those who have been following LACB for a while, you know how I feel about vintage. I could (and do) spend hours scouring thrift shops and flea markets in my spare time, and love the thrill of finding a new little treasure. I love that every piece has a story and history. When it comes to vintage clothing especially, the piece is even more interesting the longer it has been around.

A recent vintage shopping trip in Park Slope got me thinking about the stigma that older women like to lie about their age. While this may be true in some cases, I think age is such a beautiful thing. After all, it’s how we learn, become better, and become more knowledgeable about the world as a whole. Most also find that they become more comfortable with themselves as they get older, which I think is a feat within itself. Personally, I love being able to look back and see the changes I’ve been through over the years. Trust me, 15-year-old Melanie is nowhere near as awesome as the current me (just kidding - I’m still just as nerdy as ever! :) )

I really do think that things really do get better with age though –  including us.

Day by Day Through Instagram.

Tempest Make Up - Melanie Sutrathada

So I finally did it. I got an Instagram. I tried to resist but it was so hard since I absolutely love taking pictures everywhere I go! Therefore, my Day by Days will now feature Instagram pictures on the go. Follow me at msutrathada!

1. I’ve had an amazing time at my first Tribeca Film Festival! I saw a bunch of different films and was so inspired by all of the fantastic acting, projects and community. I’ve decided I’m making it my goal to be in a Tribeca film next year!

2. My best friend, Lauren, was in town and she took me to see “Once”. It was seriously phenomenal and easily the best Broadway show I’ve seen so far!

3. I saw a wedding taking place on 8th Avenue! Funny enough, I saw the bride in the passenger’s seat of a car earlier, and mused outloud to Joe on where she was going.

4. Filmed “Tempest” on Monday. Even though the day was long because I had work before the shoot, I had an amazing time on set. I’m so excited to see the footage!

5. Had a sushi date with Joe at Shenju 3 in Park Slope. Tip: Bento boxes are $7.95 if you get there for their lunch special. Also, their regular sushi rolls are $2.75.

6. Only in New York do you see things like this happening. No words.

One of the things that really stuck with me in reading 37 Days is how important it is to celebrate the little things. Whether it is getting an extra 20% off, eating fresh strawberries, or getting home a little early from work or class - it is worth taking the time to be thankful. I picked up a  pack of birthday candles on my way home yesterday and I intend to pull out these candles atleast a couple times a week just to remind me that life is a celebration!

What are you waiting for? Go out and celebrate!

Life is a Verb.

Life is a Verb

I almost always have a book on me and living in New York has only encouraged me to continue this practice. With a two hour round-trip commute to work most days, I guess you could say that I have a pretty decent amount of free time on my hands, so becoming a library regular was bound to happen. Also, I became obsessed with the New York Public Library even before I’d moved to New York thanks to “Sex and the City: The Movie”, so it really was bound to happen. I usually have a copy of an acting book, play or AM New York in my bag, but I love self-help books too.

I picked up Life is a Verb recently and I love it so far. Why? Because it’s full of inspirational quotes, touching stories and personality. It’s based on Patti Digh’s blog, 37 Days, and is about living a life without regrets. She was inspired to write her book after her step-father passed away 37 days after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

I don’t want to give too much away because I really think everyone should read this themselves, but here are the six core practices that she recommends for her readers to do “no matter how many days you have left.”

  • Say Yes.
  • Be Generous.
  • Speak Up.
  • Love More.
  • Trust Yourself.
  • Slow Down.

What are you currently reading? I’d love to hear about it! Maybe it’ll be next on my reading list!
