My First King Cake.
Surprises are almost always amazing, especially when they’re orchestrated by someone close to you. My dear friend, Rebecca, surprised me today with a special package holding this delicious king cake from Sucré in New Orleans and it totally made my morning. Rebecca had talked to me about king cake before, but I’d never actually tasted it until today. Funny enough, I hadn’t even heard of the pastry before she mentioned it – probably because it’s mainly a special tradition of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It’s safe to say that I am definitely hooked though. It’s not hard to see why they’re so incredibly popular.
The pastries taste similar to cinnamon rolls with delicious layers of buttery dough, cinnamon, and whipped cream cheese. King cakes also typically have a small plastic baby inside and tradition says that whoever gets the slice with the baby is the “King” or “Queen” of the party. Instant royalty for the day just for eating a slice of cake? Count me in. Add in that said cake is covered in glitter, and I’m 100% sold. Obviously, my standards are high.
While I’ve never really celebrated Mardi Gras before, I’m totally feeling tempted to fly myself out to New Orleans just to get a fresh slice of this delicious pastry right out of the oven. Would that be excessive/obsessive? It’s totally fine to wipe out your bank account in order to get cake, right? Yeah, I agree. Totally a-ok.
