I’ve taken to writing a list of the things that I’m grateful for every day on my train ride home. It was difficult when I first started because I felt like I was in a bit of a funk. I was feeling stressed and frustrated because everything felt so big and I felt so small. Work was feeling demanding, I wasn’t seeing Joe nearly as much because of our schedules, and I was constantly feeling exhausted because of the wear and tear the city brings. Deciding to take a step back to look at the good things in my day has made all the difference though. Suddenly, I was finding bits of joy and happiness in everything from the taste of fresh raspberries to the fact that it didn’t rain that morning (although it’s definitely raining now in New York). A change of perspective has really made life feel so much brighter and happier.
This week has been hectic but also really rewarding (which I totally believe positive thinking has had a hand in, by the way). One of the biggest highlights from my week was a much-needed day out with a good friend who is visiting from California. Sometimes, you just need to see a really familiar face – one that you have a lot of history with and who knows how you feel before you even say a word. There are few things better to me than that kind of friend and I’m definitely feeling grateful to have been able to catch up with her. Things that made today’s gratitude list? Pink roses, the way light hits my kitchen table in the mornings, and bright sweaters with pretty embroidering. Also, glitter nail polish, going barefoot, and how much I love all my readers. There really is so much I have to be grateful for right now.
Whatever is happening in your life, I truly believe that there is a silver lining. While they may be hard to find sometimes, I promise they exist. As an incredibly wise wizard named Albus Dumbledore once said, “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
